Helena Abolins-Thompson (Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Ngāi Tahu, Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-a-Rua) is a postdoctoral fellow at Ōtakou Whakaihu Waka, The University of Otago, in Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. Her areas of research focus on the advancement of equitable translational and genomic research, particularly in the context of personalised medicine, women’s and Indigenous peoples’ health, and breast and gynaecological cancers. Her PhD research utilised advanced precision medicine tools such as single nucleus RNA sequencing and tissue-derived tumour organoid models to increase representation of wāhine Māori (Māori women, Indigenous peoples of New Zealand) in the genomic data that informs personalised medicine approaches, whilst ensuring Western scientific approaches were embedded within Māori worldviews and frameworks.
